How to Reset a Check Engine Light

check engine light on

If you’ve been driving around Reading when your Toyota check engine light suddenly illuminates—and there’s nothing wrong—how do you reset the check engine light?

It’s annoying to see it stay on when everything is working fine. Woburn Toyota explains how to reset the check engine light below.

Be Certain Nothing Is Wrong With Your Car

Before you reset your Toyota check engine light and head back out on the Burlington roads, have your car checked out to ensure there is nothing wrong. Ignoring an engine problem can void your warranty or make the situation more serious. You can easily schedule service online with our certified Toyota technicians near Stoneham.

How Do You Reset the Check Engine Light?

When you’re ready, follow these simple steps on how to reset the check engine light:

  1. Turn off your engine and put on safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Locate the negative terminal on your car battery. It will have a black cap and a negative (–) symbol.
  3. Using a wrench, loosen the nut on the negative battery terminal and pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it disconnected for 30 to 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and re-tighten it using your wrench.

Disconnecting your battery will likely also reset your infotainment system settings, so you might need to reset the time on your dash and your favorite radio channels.

Check Your Gas Cap

If your Toyota check engine light is still on, and you know nothing is wrong, it could also be a loose or cracked gas cap. Sometimes, this will make your check engine light come on. The last step is to remove your gas cap, put it back on, or replace it if necessary.
