Some issues can wait (like maybe an emissions issue), and some can’t! While ultimately it’s your decision, we at Woburn Toyota urge you to take care of any significant issues immediately. Your safety may depend on it! Plus, ignoring an engine problem can void your warranty or make the situation far more serious. You can easily schedule service online with our Certified Toyota technicians near Burlington.

Steps to Reset an Engine Light

When you’re ready to reset your engine light, follow these simple steps:

  1. Turn off your engine and put on safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Locate the negative terminal on your car battery. It will have a black cap and a negative (–) symbol.
  3. Using a wrench, loosen the nut on the negative battery terminal and pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it disconnected for 30 to 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and re-tighten it using your wrench.

Disconnecting your battery will likely also reset your infotainment system settings, so you might need to reset the time on your dash and your favorite radio channels.

Check Your Gas Cap

If your check engine light is still on and you know nothing is wrong, it could also be a loose or cracked gas cap. Sometimes, this will make your check engine light come on. The last step in how to rest your check engine light is to remove your gas cap and put it back on, or even replace it.
