Check the Treads of Your Tires with the Penny Test

October 14th, 2020 by

The tires are one of the most important parts of your vehicle, and this is more than enough reason to make sure that your tires are always properly inflated, balanced and that they have plenty of tread. The tread is what helps the tire get a grip on the road below, and having the right amount of tread on your tires ensures that it won't be as easy for your vehicle to lose traction and slide on slippery roads or in muddy conditions around Lynn or Malden.

There are different ways that you can gauge the amount of life your tires have left, but the one we'll be discussing today is one of the easiest and can be done in a matter of seconds, and that is the penny test.

What is the Penny Test?

The penny test is a foolproof way that Burlington, MA drivers can check for themselves within seconds whether your tires are still doing good on tread or if they need to be changed. The test works by placing the penny headfirst into the grooves of the treads all across the tire. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head when you do this, your tire's treads are shallow, and the tire is worn, so it's time for replacements.

Meanwhile, if the tread always covers the top part or more of Lincoln's head, then your treads are a bit more than 2/32 of an inch deep, meaning that your tires are still good for a little while but need to be kept up with.

With winter coming, it's important that your vehicle is topped off and that everything is in proper working order. So, if you live around Lexington or Danvers and find yourself in need of new tires, be sure to contact us or come by and make an appointment with our service center here at Woburn Toyota in Woburn, MA.
